Hillel 818 Announces Karmi Monsher As New Board President

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Karmi Monsher as Chair of our Board of Directors!

Karmi, who joined the Hillel 818 board in 2018, succeeds Kathi Mangel, who has served as Chair since 2017.

"I am thrilled to take on the position as Hillel 818 Board Chair," Karmi said. "I have watched Hillel 818 become a vital part of our community by engaging students on their Jewish journey. Kathi Mangel has been such a guiding force to create a vitally important place for Jewish students at CSUN, Pierce College, and LA Valley College. Our Executive Director Matt Baram and his team have created a safe space for students to feel welcome and inspired to engage Jewishly and become future leaders. The future looks bright with our brand-new Hillel space and talented staff to take us into the next generation. I look forward to the incredible programs and possibilities for these cherished young adults.”

Karmi is an experienced leader in the LA Jewish community, currently serving as Vice Chair of Development for Camp Ramah in California, Campaign Cabinet member and Pk-12 committee member for the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and involved with various committees at Adat Ari El synagogue. Since joining the Hillel 818 board, Karmi has been a true champion of Hillel 818, chairing our Executive Director Hiring Committee in 2019 and serving on the Development Committee.

Outgoing chair Kathi Mangel shared that “I am thrilled that Karmi Monsher has been elected as the incoming Chair. The challenge of Covid made me realize even more how vital Hillel 818 is to ensure that our students have access to Jewish life on campus and it was my privilege to lead such a dedicated and talented group of lay leaders to this point. The past five years have brought so much excitement and change to this Hillel, including our director, Matt Baram, his growing professional staff, a $2 million capital campaign and building renovation project, and new members to the Board of Directors who will continue to oversee an organization that can serve all Jewish students at CSUN, Pierce and LA Valley College. I invite the entire community to join us in the continued growth and success of Hillel 818.”

Mazal tov Karmi and todah rabah to Kathi. As we celebrate this transition, we wish for Hillel 818, Karmi, and Kathi, to continue going from strength to strength.
