November Events Recap

November was a month full of meaningful moments at Hillel 818, as students came together to celebrate Jewish culture, build community, and create memories. Here are some highlights from a busy and impactful month.

Annual Pumpkin Smashing

We kicked off November with one of our most anticipated traditions: Pumpkin Smashing! Students gathered to safely smash pumpkins, releasing stress before finals. The event was a perfect way to unwind while embracing a fun, slightly messy Hillel tradition.

Sigd Celebration

During our celebration students got to dive in and learn about Ethiopian Jewish traditions. They got to participate in an Ethiopian coffee ceremony and enjoy traditional Ethiopian food. Students also heard from Shlomit Tegenye, an Ethiopian Jew and the Israel Fellow at Greater Portland Hillel. Shlomit shared her personal reflections on the meaning of Sigd and what it’s like to celebrate.

Next Dor & Valley Beth Shalom (VBS) Friendsgiving

In partnership with Valley Beth Shalom, our Next Dor group hosted a warm and welcoming Friendsgiving dinner that brought young Jewish professionals together around the table. With delicious food, heartfelt conversations, and a bit of community service, the night embodied the spirit of gratitude that defines this season.

Greek Shabbat

November wrapped up with a lively and inclusive Greek Shabbat, welcoming members of the Greek community to celebrate Shabbat together. In partnership with CSUN AEPi, Hillel 818 created a welcoming space for students to connect with one another, share a meal, and experience the meaning of Shabbat alongside their peers.
